September 26, 2020 · Online (first virtual AADay)
The 10th Asian American Day Festival marked the tenth anniversary of the Asian American Association of Boston (AAAB). Because of COVID-19, AADay was held online for the first time.
Public-health context
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) reported on September 17 that the state recorded 15 new COVID-19 deaths that day (9,051 total) and 419 new confirmed cases (124,139 total). Against that backdrop, AAAB moved its signature festival online and offered a series of virtual lectures for Greater Boston’s Asian community on public health, legal issues, earthquake forecasting, healthcare, and art appreciation.
Census reminder
With the U.S. Census deadline on September 30, the Association urged residents to complete their census forms. Participation helps communities receive federal funding.
Governor’s letters
Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker and Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito sent letters honoring AAAB’s tenth anniversary. “Founded in 2010, the Asian American Association of Boston has made tremendous contributions to the growth and prosperity of the Asian community in Massachusetts,” Governor Baker wrote.
Since its founding under Klysler Yen, AAAB has held the mission “Integrating Asian American communities and beautifying our neighborhoods.” The Association has worked as a bridge among ethnic groups and a hub for community connection. Chairman Edward Ye Huang has long promoted Asian culture and intercultural exchange — including accompanying Italian friends to the Forbidden City in Beijing and to Qufu, Shandong, the hometown of Confucius.
Online lecture — September 26, 2020
On Saturday, September 26, 2020, 9:30–11:00 a.m., AAAB hosted a Zoom lecture, “U.S. Export Controls and Review of Foreign Investments,” as U.S.–China trade relations tightened and export-control and inbound-investment rules drew more questions from Asian American businesses.
The session was given by Edward Ye Huang, Esq., then a 25-year veteran serving New England. Supporting organizations included the Boston Fujianese Chamber of Commerce and the Xiamen University Alumni Association of Boston.
The 10th AADay also presented an online concert; the printed recap invited viewers to scan a QR code to watch it.
